Why We Built SwissPassCalculator
We overpaid by CHF 280 on our first Switzerland trip. This is the calculator we wish we'd had.
TL;DR: SwissPassCalculator is a Swiss rail pass comparison tool built by travellers who got burned buying the wrong pass. We run the actual CHF maths for your specific itinerary — not generic advice.
The problem with existing tools
My family and I did a 6-day Switzerland trip in 2023. Every website we found said the same thing: “Swiss Travel Pass is great value!” So we bought it.
We should have bought a Half Fare Card and individual tickets. We overpaid by ~CHF 280 for two adults. The excursions we actually did — one mountain trip, three city train journeys — didn’t justify the all-inclusive pass.
The question “is Swiss Travel Pass worth it for my trip?” is not a general question. It depends on your exact dates, regions, group size, whether you have children, and which excursions you’re planning. None of the tools we found answered that question with real numbers.
How we built the recommendation engine
We started by gathering everything we knew about Switzerland rail travel — years of personal trips, SBB tariff publications, excursion operator pricing, Family Card rules, peak season surcharges, regional pass exceptions. All of it.
Think of it like a very thorough Swiss spreadsheet — the kind a Swiss watchmaker would build if they were obsessed with making sure every traveller paid exactly the right amount. Every route, every pass option, every discount rule captured precisely.
Then we put an AI layer on top: so instead of reading a spreadsheet, you have a conversation. You tell us your trip, and we give you a clear answer — which pass wins, by how much in CHF, and a checklist of exactly what to buy and when.
The result is a recommendation you can trust: built on Swiss travel knowledge, structured for precision, explained in plain English.
How we keep prices accurate
SBB updates prices periodically, usually each December. We review and update our pricing data quarterly, cross-referencing official SBB publications, jungfrau.ch, titlis.ch, and rigi.ch. Data last verified: May 2026.
We always recommend confirming the final price at SBB.ch or the excursion operator’s website before booking. Our tool tells you which pass wins and by how much — the operator’s site is where you confirm and pay.
What we cover
7 Swiss regions: Zürich, Berner Oberland, Central Switzerland, Lake Geneva region, Zermatt & Matterhorn, Graubünden, and Ticino. 12+ pass options including Swiss Travel Pass (3/4/6/8/15-day), Swiss Travel Pass Flex, Half Fare Card, Berner Oberland Regional Pass, Tell Pass, and point-to-point routes. 10+ excursions including Jungfraujoch (Top of Europe), Mt. Titlis, Mt. Rigi, Gornergrat, Glacier Express, and Bernina Express. Family Card auto-calculation. Peak season (SDP) surcharge detection.
What we don’t cover (yet)
Ski passes, hotel booking, restaurant recommendations. We stay focused on Swiss rail because that’s where the calculation complexity is highest and where the savings potential is largest.
