Mt. Rigi & Swiss Travel Pass — FAQ

Is Mt. Rigi fully covered by Swiss Travel Pass?

Yes — Mt. Rigi is one of the few excursions fully included in Swiss Travel Pass. The boat from Lucerne to Vitznau and the Vitznau–Rigi Kulm cogwheel railway are both 100% free. No surcharge, no discount — completely free.

How do I get to Mt. Rigi from Lucerne?

Lake boat from Luzern Bahnhof to Vitznau (~1h, free with STP), then the Rigi Bahnen cogwheel railway from Vitznau to Rigi Kulm (30 min, free with STP). Or take the train from Luzern to Arth-Goldau and the cogwheel from there — also free with STP.

How much does Mt. Rigi cost without Swiss Travel Pass?

The Vitznau–Rigi Kulm cogwheel railway round trip costs approximately CHF 68 per adult. The Lucerne–Vitznau boat is an additional CHF 14 each way. With Swiss Travel Pass, all of this is free.

What is the best way to do Rigi as a day trip?

Take the morning boat from Lucerne to Vitznau (~09:00 departure), cogwheel to Rigi Kulm, summit walk and lunch, then return via Arth-Goldau for variety. The Vitznau route has better lake views; the Arth-Goldau route has better mountain scenery.

Can I hike between Rigi stations?

Yes — there are well-marked hiking trails between Rigi Kulm (1,797 m), Rigi Staffel, Rigi Kaltbad, and down to Weggis on the lake. The Swiss Travel Pass covers the boats and cogwheels, so you can hike one way and ride back for free.

Calculate whether Swiss Travel Pass pays for your whole trip

Rigi alone doesn’t justify the pass — but add Lucerne, Zürich, and a few long-distance trains and the numbers change fast.
